Kay B. Day freelance correspondent, author, speaker
Background
I've been self employed as a writer for over 20 years. In addition to writing for magazines and newspapers, my work includes two books of poetry and a nonfiction book detailing our daughter's experience with recurrent abdominal pain. Her story fortunately has a happy ending. I've contributed articles and poems to a number of other publications, including manuals and educational tools for South Carolina's Endangered Species Program. I speak to trade, school, and civic groups about writing. One of the highlights of 2006 for me has been creating an oral history program for Shands Jacksonville as part of the Arts in Medicine program there. Another exciting venture is my new column at Family Security Matters, a venue that permits me to express my views on world and national affairs for a wide audience. Whether I'm interviewing a well-known writer or penning an essay about a personal experience, I aim at a high standard of service for my editors. And above all, I focus on process. That's what writing is all about.
Awards
My collection A Poetry Break was nominated for Book of the Year, Poetry, in 2005 by the Southeastern Independent Booksellers Association. This collection also won top prize for poetry in 2004 from Florida Writers Association. My nonfiction book Killing Earl won 2nd place in Florida's National League of American Pen Women competition. Other awards include the ByLine Literary Award for poetry and the Carrie Allen McCray Award for poetry. I've won a number of awards, but the best recognition of all comes from the reader who writes to tell me he or she is touched by my words.
Presentations
I've had the pleasure of presenting talks and workshops to groups like the Florida Council of Teachers of English, the Southeastern Writers Association, Girlfriends' Weekend and the Southeastern Booksellers' Trade Show. I've read my poetry to groups like Jacksonville's American Association of University Women and the BookIsland Festival.
